The lion is still considered the “lord of the grasslands” because of his majesty and superior strength compared to other animals living in the savanna. Lions are always in the position of predators that make other animals fear.
However, if left alone, lions can become targets of cunning and clever hyenas.
The incident recorded at Mala Mala Nature Reserve (South Africa) shows a male lion preparing to enjoy a buffalo after a hunting trip. However, the African buffalo at that time was not completely dead, so it continuously roared in pain.
The pitiful cry of the buffalo drew the attention of the hyenas nearby. Realizing that the male lion was alone, the hyenas did not easily ignore the “delicious food”.
The hyenas have constantly surrounded and harassed, not letting the lions enjoy their meal. Even the advantage of numbers makes the hyenas not afraid but even rush to attack, biting the lion’s tail to pull away from the prey.
No matter how hard it is, a lone lion can’t fight off a pack of aggressive hyenas, even the lion can be attacked and killed by hyenas. With no other choice, the lion had to accept leaving his prey to escape.
After chasing the “king” away from the prey, the hyenas were able to enjoy the wild buffalo deliciously without having to hunt.
