One of the most rare cats in Kruger National Park catches a mouse in broad daylight, right in the middle of the road.
Hanno Erasmus, an avid wildlife photographer and enthusiast, captured the rare scene and shared it with LatestSightings.com.
“I began my drive by exploring the H6 just south of Satara Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park. It was an ordinary day, filled with anticipation of what nature had in store for me. As I came close to the Sonop Waterhole, I noticed the movement of a small mammal in the grass.”
“I could not believe my eyes; it was a female caracal stealthily stalking through the tall grass. Intrigued by her behavior, I cautiously followed, careful not to disturb her. When she suddenly pounced and disappeared out of sight momentarily.”
Caracals, also known as African lynxes, are medium-sized wildcats native to various regions of Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. Renowned for their remarkable hunting skills, caracals have a unique appearance that sets them apart from other feline species.
“To my astonishment, she pounced upon a tiny mouse, her movements executed with precision and grace. I held my breath, captivated by the scene unfolding before my eyes. That’s when I noticed some more movement not far behind her. It was her kitten.”
“The mother caracal had caught the mouse for her young one. Both caracals then proceeded to walk into the road. I could not believe my luck! She then, for a brief moment, turned to me with the mouse in her mouth and posed.”
“Have you ever had a moment in nature that left you in awe? This moment was my moment of awe!”
With their striking reddish-brown coats adorned with black spots and tufted ears, caracals exude a sense of elegance. Their muscular bodies and long legs enable them to sprint and leap with incredible agility, making them formidable predators.
“Throughout the sighting, I couldn’t help but marvel at the bond between the caracal mother and her kitten. It surely highlighted the nurturing instincts ingrained within them.”
