Shocking footage showing the moment a crocodile snapped and killed a baby shark in North Queensland has emerged.

The confronting encounter was filmed by Dan Johnson, who was fishing near Proserpine in the Whitsundays region, when he spotted the mammoth four-metre croc.

In the clip, the relatively small shark is seen by the riverbank as the crocodile swims slowly beneath the water’s surface.

Seconds later the crocodile takes a munch into the shark before destroying its body between bites.

Mr Johnson said the croc is infamous among locals who have nicknamed him ‘Boofhead’.

“He’s a bit of a celebrity. This crocodile is always there but it’s not often it takes a fish from you when you’re fishing,” he told Nine.

Mr Johnson also noted while the croc was a common sight in the area, to nab his antics on tape was rare.

“To capture it that close up was amazing, to be able to see it. I’ve been there so many times,” he said.

“He was just cruising. You look at that and think, if you’re in the water, you can’t outswim that animal. You see how fast they are when they’re not even trying.”
